Whether they know it or not, many people use cloud computing every single day. Clouding computing is defined as the delivery of computing services over the internet. The internet is the ‘cloud’ and the services can include anything from databases to specific software. At Tier4, our cloud computing services are tailored for a range of organisation types, form small businesses to large enterprises. Find out more about how cloud computing works and why you should implement cloud computing services at your organisation.

How Does Cloud Computing Work?

Cloud computing works in the background to make many of the online services we use possible. Examples of services that use cloud computing include social media networks, email, online collaboration tools such as Google docs and backup services such as iCloud or Dropbox.

Cloud computing works when a person logs in and requests a specific service through their cloud computing application. The cloud provider will validate the user’s request and if successful, will grant access to the service that they request.

An example of cloud computing is Google Drive. If you create a presentation on your computer using Google Drive, you can check and review it on your phone as it is automatically saved onto the cloud. Simply log in with the correct credentials and the latest version of your presentation should be available.

In technical terms, the process works like this: you log in and send a request to the server, the server validates your request and then you get access to the requested service.

Why You Need Cloud Computing At Your Organisation

Cloud computing is used by a range of organisations from small businesses to large enterprises. Implementing cloud computing services can add a number of benefits to your organisation, from increased accessibility, to reliability, to reduced costs, to increased storage and backup capabilities.

Scalability is one of the biggest advantages of cloud computing. With cloud computing, organisations are no longer paying for what they don’t need. Before the cloud, the cost of IT was not as scalable as it is today. The scalability offered by cloud computing means that regardless of your organisation size, you are not paying excess amounts of money on resources that you are not using. If a business requires more storage space, the process of upgrading is fairly straightforward.
